Tiger Tank Euphoria Live @ The Basement

This Saturday, March 6th Tiger Tank Euphoria is playing our monthly at The Basement in Long Beach. The Secret 6 and Bearface will open with vintage sounds from DJ Lithuanian Prince between sets and on into the night. Should be a great night if you can make it out! More info here.

A note on the poster design: I had read over on the ISO50 blog about a program called Mousepaths (which is now actually called IOGraph) that traces your mouse actions over a period of time and creates a graphic based on those actions. The background for this poster is what came of me tracing my mouse over a 4 1/2 hour period one night while working (I colorized the image myself, the program only gives B&W output). Like most of the show posters I create, this I consider more of a design exercise since I can’t spend a lot of time on it but am looking for ways to keep things interesting. One day I may go back and ready these for print but for now they remain brief thoughts that get the message across.

Ordinary Days

I’ve been selected the winner of a photo contest that lead up to tonight’s opening of Ordinary Days at South Coast Repertory Theater in Costa Mesa, California. They asked for submissions that exemplified our own ordinary day told in photographs, so I selected some from my iPhone (of all things!) that I’ve taken on what are in fact many-a-ordinary-day.

Winning netted me a pair of tickets, drinks, food and an after party! Should make for a wonderful Friday evening. See my submission after the jump or go here.

Agenda 2010

I’m headed to the AGENDA Tradeshow today along with my Grnappletree cohorts to show our spring and summer collections as well as debut our collab with 9five: a rad pair of sunglasses and a t-shirt to go along with it.

Having come from a tradeshow background I’m really curious about this one; most of the shows I’ve been to were automotive-related so needless to say this show will be much more up my alley. I’ll have my camera with me as I hope to report back with some good shots and a synopsis.

Bands I Play In: Bethpage Black

Bethpage Black Opéra-Comique

BPB02

Bethpage Black

BPB04

I wrote about Bethpage Black before in this post, a band that recorded an EP before ever setting foot in the same room together. It’s an interesting way to approach a music project, it’s kind of the opposite of how things usually go (play together, write songs, book shows, then record). On December 10th we will release our debut EP Opéra-Comique with a show at the Art Theater in Long Beach, California.

The artwork started from a library of graphic explorations that I save for a time when they are appropriate. It’s almost like keeping a journal full of lyrics that eventually get used when the right song is written for them. We had discussed the concept of using a female figure to talk about some of the lyrical themes on the EP, and knowing that we were going to use a female model for the album artwork (more on that soon) I thought the use of an abstract version of a woman was a good connection and still different enough from the record. I like the colors on a dark field for this band, it feels appropriate and classy enough for the venue. We needed two posters, one as an art piece and one that had a bit more information on it, so I decided they should connect visually by being mirror images; if you hold them next to one another they create a sort-of Rorschach test image. The tickets were placed on a cut sheet so that the back of each ticket is different depending on which part of the sheet it was cut from.

The posters and the EP will be for sale at the show, the tickets are on sale now at a few places on the web or in Long Beach (you actually get a free EP when you buy a ticket to the show). You can go to the Bethpage Black website to find out more. Hope to see you at the show!

Here are a couple tracks from the forthcoming EP, including a cover of Chick Corea’s You’re Everything:

Bands I Play In: Tiger Tank Euphoria

Tiger Tank Euphoria @ The Basement

One of the first people I became friends with in Long Beach happened to be a keyboard player looking to start a band. He and his drummer had already begun playing shows as a sort of jazz/fusion duo but wanted to expand the sound and form into an actual working band. So we got together in my new studio here and started playing together which was the genesis of Tiger Tank Euphoria.

Over time we’ve experimented with different setups and styles, sometimes inviting guest musicians (vocalists, MCs, horn players, guitar players) to perform with us while still keeping the trio as the nucleus of the band. Below are a few live videos, one with just the three of us and two others with different guests. The audio isn’t that great (is it ever on YouTube?) but we hope to be releasing our debut EP in early 2010 so until then you get the general idea.

This Saturday, December 5th marks the first show of our residency at the Basement in Long Beach. We will be playing live and hosting Eugene & The 1914 (yes, I’m actually playing two sets that night) as well as Lightmusic. Hope you can make it out!

Bethpage Black EP Release

Bethpage Black Opéra-Comique

Over the summer a drummer friend of mine approached me about recording guitars for his new project. So we got together in my home studio to track the sessions and the project has turned into a band that is releasing those recordings at the end of this year. Bethpage Black will be releasing its debut Opéra–Comique at the Art Theater in Long Beach on December 10th. My band Eugene & The 1914 will also play the show along with friends Derock and Ben White.
